Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage Selected by Leading European Engineering Company to Revitalize its IT Systems
Working with Layer 8 IT-Services, the Sustainable Engineering Company Recognized the Economic Benefits of Implementing a Software-Defined Storage Platform
SANTA CLARA, Calif., & STOCKHOLM — January 13, 2014 —Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced that Goodtech, a leading Nordics-based technology and engineering company dedicated to renewing and developing important public functions, has implemented Nexenta’s highly available SDS solution to underpin its IT systems.
With customers in various industries including manufacturing, energy and the public sector, Goodtech develops and delivers projects and services through the integration of sustainable solutions. Initially established in Sweden in 1913, the company now employs more than 1,500 people in over 40 locations in Norway, Sweden and Åland. Examples of customers in Sweden are AstraZeneca, LKAB, NCC, PEAB, Trafikverket, Vattenfall and Volvo.
With its incumbent storage solution reaching the end of its life, Goodtech worked with Layer 8 IT-Services, its technology partner, to find a new storage platform that could keep total cost of ownership (TCO) low while delivering high performance, stability and functionality. After initially testing NexentaStor in a controlled environment, Goodtech chose to deploy a Nexenta solution, running on Dell servers, with a NexentaStor High Availability (HA) Cluster to manage, control and protect its data.
Goodtech’s virtualized environment hosts hundreds of virtual machines (VMs) and its data is stored across two data centers. It is vital that Goodtech’s IT infrastructure is supported by a reliable, high performance storage platform that can be scaled appropriately to keep up with capacity demand and ensure business continuity.
“We were initially attracted to Nexenta because of its ZFS based, open source set up that could be adapted to fit our exact needs, and stop us from being tied down to one vendor,” said Anders Hellquist, Senior Systems Engineer at Goodtech. “After comparing it to a number of other offerings, we implemented Nexenta as we were amazed at the cost saving that could be achieved and it now provides us with a rock-solid foundation to build upon.”
“Goodtech started the journey towards Software-Defined Storage by installing a test-environment with NexentaStor to evaluate functionality, scalability and performance. During their tests they not only found it was enterprise class storage, it also outperformed the current storage in performance and scalability. This made it very easy for Goodtech to take the next step and replace their primary storage platform with NexentaStor,” said Johan Tungström, CEO, Layer 8 IT-Services.
Mark Jordan, EMEA VP at Nexenta, said: “Goodtech is a prime example of a business that can benefit from Software-Defined Storage. When a legacy solution reaches the end of its life, an SDS alternative is the most flexible platform on offer in terms of cost and scalability and avoids enterprises suffering from vendor lock-in in the future. Goodtech has started its journey into the Software-Defined world, and are already reaping the rewards. “

Global Unified Communications and Collaboration Service Provider Selects Nexenta Software-Defined Storage to Meet Challenges of Growing Software Defined Data Center Requirements
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – December 11, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, has announced it has been chosen by Arkadin to meet its rapidly expanding enterprise storage requirements. The NTT Communications Company is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing providers of Collaboration and Unified Communications services. After collaborating with partner Actualis, Arkadin selected the Nexenta solution to meet its rapidly expanding enterprise storage requirements.
Founded in France in 2001, Arkadin offers a complete range of integrated audio, web, video conferencing and Unified Communications solutions via a network of 53 offices in 32 countries across the globe, delivering its business solutions using a software as a service (SaaS) model that provides customers with fast, scalable deployments with a high ROI.
With storage requirements at Arkadin’s R&D data center, which holds more than 600 virtual machines (VMs), growing at more than 20% annually, it was important to have an alternative storage solution to support its current capacity and future growth needs. The solution needed to be simple to use and efficient for hosting all of its environments, in addition to delivering optimal performance and resiliency with limited administration at a competitive price.
Arkadin was keen to explore open storage solutions to avoid being locked into proprietary hardware platforms. After exploring alternatives, it selected Nexenta’s state-of-the-art NexentaStor solution, opting for a NexentaStor Enterprise Edition license coupled with the NexentaStor High Availability (HA) Cluster option, as well as hard drives from Nexenta partner, Supermicro.
“Working closely with Arkadin we were able to design a solution to match their exact storage requirements,” said Eric Pinatton, CTO at Actualis. The combination of Nexenta’s scalability and management simplicity coupled with Supermicro hardware gives Arkadin the high-performance storage the business needs. This highly-available storage environment is ideally suited to growing enterprises and we are delighted to be partnered with such a dynamic, industry-leading SDS provider.
Vincent Thinselin, Senior Technical Architect at Arkadin said: “Installing an SDS solution from Nexenta has enabled us to address current and future capacity and performance requirements in a cost-effective manner. If additional storage capacity is required, the Nexenta solution can be seamlessly scaled for delivering reliable, uninterrupted service, a key requirement for ensuring an excellent customer experience.”
“As one of the world’s fastest growing Collaboration Service Providers, it is vital that Arkadin’s R&D infrastructure is underpinned by a scalable, reliable storage platform,” explained Mark Jordan, VP and General Manager EMEA at Nexenta. “Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage solutions are ideally suited to this type of environment, where mission critical data needs to remain highly available. Our scalable Software-Defined offering allows our customers to step away from the Massively Expensive Storage Systems (MESS) offered by legacy vendors, and are designed with business growth in mind.”

Leading Big Data Cloud Service Provider Relies on Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Solutions in Its Software Defined Data Center
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – December 9, 2014 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the deployment and case study for EngineRoom.io®. Based in Sydney, Australia, EngineRoom.io is a leading Secure Private Cloud Service for Big Data, offering not only compute cycles, but also a full range of tuning and other services for Big Data and High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads. Businesses from all industries come to EngineRoom.io, because it enables them to derive insight and revenue from their data by giving them the capacity to aggregate structured and unstructured data, to handle high-velocity streaming data, and to process large data sets at scale; the end result is a 500x improvement in “time to insight”.
“EngineRoom.io has built a successful and growing business across an impressive array of industries, from media and entertainment, life sciences, financial services, oil & gas, engineering and more," said Anthony Davis, VP/GM APAC at Nexenta. “We are very excited to be able to work with EngineRoom.io and help provide a solution that gives them a competitive advantage that is high-performance, scalable and economical.”
As the business began to grow in early 2013 they faced a critical build or buy decision to meet their expanding storage needs. “We looked closely at between twenty and thirty different storage solutions, or hybrids thereof,” according to CTO Nicky Ladas. “We weren’t satisfied with any of them for a wide variety of reasons. After extensive R&D and production testing at scale, we finally decided on Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage offering.”
EngineRoom.io had to deal with massive amounts of data; but data that also fluctuated wildly based on platform usage. If you’re going to collect terabytes, and even petabytes, of business-impacting information, it needs to be stored properly. Nexenta provided the Software-Defined Storage performance solution that met all of EngineRoom.io’s criteria.
“We made the decision to move ahead with Nexenta because they met our somewhat unique list of requirements we had in place,” said CEO Stefan Gillard. “We were pleasantly surprised, however, when the implementation came in at one-twentieth the cost of competing solutions.”
NexentaStor is now up and running across multiple locations, with petabytes of data under management. To make this possible, EngineRoom.io also partners with other leading Software-Defined Data Center solution providers including Brocade, SanDisk (FusionIO) and VMware along with Nexenta.
Please refer to the EngineRoom.io case study for more implementation details.

Join the Nexenta Webinar on How Software-Defined Storage could Save Public Sector Organizations 70% in IT Spending
Nexenta to discuss the results of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) survey that revealed most central and local government organizations are overspending on legacy storage solutions
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and LONDON – December 8, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced a live webinar to discuss why the public sector should understand better the benefits of SDS. The webinar comes after a Freedom of Information Act survey revealed that the public sector is still purchasing legacy storage, even though it costs on average 3x more per terabyte (TB) than the Software-Defined alternative. Hosted by BrightTalk as part of the Storage Networking Summit, the webinar will be held on Tuesday, December 9th at 08:30 – 09:30 AM PST (16:30 – 17:30 GMT).
Join Nick Baker, EMEA Systems Engineer at Nexenta, for a thought-provoking discussion on the benefits of SDS and how it could cut IT costs for public sector organizations. The discussion is aimed at central and local government IT decision makers and intended to provoke a wider discussion on Software-Defined Storage and how a future-proof data center can be achieved.
Nick Baker said, “Data center managers are under constant pressure to deliver high performance systems on tight budgets. The FOIA results really show that more needs to be done to educate public sector IT professionals on what they can do to reduce costs, and make the most of their limited funds. Not only must they have a scalable, fail-safe IT infrastructure, but also the freedom to control and minimize initial and operational expenditure.”

Nexenta Continues its Market Expansion via New Operations and Partnerships in Japan
Taking Advantage of Rapid Market Growth in Asia around Software Defined Storage-centric Cloud Computing
Santa Clara, CA and Tokyo, Japan - December 4, 2014 -- Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the launch of its Japanese office located in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, and led by Jun Matsuura, Japan Country Manager. The goal of the office is to further expand Nexenta’s purpose-built storage OS offerings in the Japanese market. Nexenta Japan will achieve its growth goals by distributing Software-Defined Storage solutions through partners Core Micro Systems Inc. and Ascentech K.K.
NexentaStor, the first Software-Defined Storage solution released by Nexenta in 2008, is deployed on close to an Exabyte of raw capacity, across thousands of customer deployments in the United States, European and Asia Pacific markets. In Japan, Nexenta solutions have already been proven as enterprise class storage solutions delivered on industry standard x86 servers and disk enclosures (JBOD). Nexenta Software-Defined Storage solutions deliver high capacity storage with performance, flexibility and scalability on par with traditional storage offerings and at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). The performance and robustness of Nexenta offerings enables end users to address the issue of exponentially growing data stores, managed under a shrinking IT budget.
Nexenta specializes in software development of storage solutions, and enables organizations to integrate with various hardware providers via certified reference architectures. Additionally, in cooperation with virtualization and cloud platform partners including VMware, Citrix, OpenStack, CloudStack, and others, Nexenta engages industry-wide in the challenge of managing data growth. In Japan, Nexenta will offer products and support through distributors and system integrators.
